The first Formula One (F1) competition was born in 1950. 方程式赛车，原意是惯例，常规；准则，方案。赛车必须依照国际汽车联合会制定颁发的车辆技术规则规定的程式制造，包括车体结构、长度和宽度、最低重量、发动机工作容积、汽缸数量、油箱容量、电子设备、轮胎的距离和大小等。

以共同的方程式（规则限制）所造出来的赛车，就是方程式赛车，所进行的比赛即方程式汽车赛。

赛车运动起源于1894年，当时的比赛对参赛车辆没有任何限制，直到1904年国际汽车运动联合会成立后，出于公平性与安全性，开始尝试对参赛车辆进行分类和限制。早期的分类从各种角度进行过尝试，先后包括最大车重、耗油率、气缸半径等，但效果都不理想，直到引入了气缸容量的概念才有了满意的效果。这就是“方程式”的意思：一个对所有参赛车辆的限制标准。

世界各地还有不少统一规格的方程式赛车，其建造“方程式”由制造商自行制订，因为每辆赛车都是一样，这类方程式赛车大多作为入门级的赛事。例如汽车制造商雷诺旗下的赛车部“雷诺运动”设计了雷诺方程式，其他还有宝马方程式、福特方程式等。
