Jinwen is a title of ancient Chinese calligraphy, which refers to the inscription cast on the bronze ware of yin and Zhou dynasties, also known as Zhongdingwen. The Shang and Zhou dynasties are the era of bronze ware. The ritual vessels of bronze ware are represented by Ding, musical instruments are represented by bell, "Zhong Ding" is the synonym of bronze ware.

China has entered the Bronze Age since the Xia Dynasty. The smelting and manufacturing technology of copper are very developed. Because the Zhou Dynasty also called copper gold, the inscriptions on the bronze ware were called "Jinwen" or "jijinwen"; and because this kind of bronze ware had the most words on the bell tripod, it was also called "zhongdingwen" in the past.

Jin Wen was used a thousand years ago, from the end of Shang Dynasty to the end of Qin Dynasty, about 800 years ago. According to Rong Geng's Jin Wen Bian, there are 3722 characters in Jin Wen, of which 2420 can be recognized.
